2b (Limitations)

Typography: is a very important feature as it sometimes carries the bits of the ident that most time hold the most important information in an ident such as the main colours, the text and the back ground matter, it also deals with font sizes and aesthetics. Typography when used well can be very pleasing to watch why sometimes when it hasn't been used properly it can be a huge limitation because if the colours and the font haven't been used appropriately within the logo it will confuse the audience and leave them lost in the message the ident is trying to pass across and brand the channel in a way that wasn't intended.

In the ident above the way they have used typography has made the ident rather strange and the concept or idea of the ident is lost, the typography is so bad that it is difficult to identify the channel that is been promoted here.

Size: The size of an ident is really matters because it allows the ident to be visible enough to be seen and clear to the audience, if its too small they won't be able to see it and they will not know what channel they are watching. And having it big may confuse the audience and sometimes it might pixelate as it is been stretched. size is relevant when it comes to the graphical resolution as the ident wants to be seen clearly throughout the ident it should follow certain font sizes and consistency throughout the whole ident.

Colour:
Colour is important in an ident because it is how a channel is recognised and sometimes sets the tone of the channel as well as giving the viewers a visual representation of the channel through the ident.
Due to this colour becomes a limitation because most television industries have already branded them selves with specific colours and can't be used by others and there are just certain colour pallets that just can't be used on live broadcast as it cause noise and clipping when the colours are too bright, there fore restricting idents to work with colours that are only broadcast safe which means that certain colours

In other words, Colour can be seen as a limitation because there are existing colours and certain ones that cannot be broadcasted.
This is an example of broadcast safe. This means that only certain colours can be broadcasted on TV. For example the colours red, green and blue must have values of 235 or less on TV otherwise it will come up too bright and can cause a screen buzz or 'clipping'.

Aspect Ratio: this is the dimension in which the idents are displayed, in Tv the main aspect ratio required for live broadcasting is 16:9 reason been that the people these days now have big flat screen TVs and a 4:3 dimension will look very small on flat screen Tv's and most of the information will be lost as the 4:3 dimension makes it look like a box.

The limitation here is that when creating an ident the content creator will have to make enough content to fill up most part of the screen, and diffrent device have diffrent aspect ratios so they need to make them for diffrent devices. for example the resolution on an iphone is different from the resolution on a Tv screen so they will have to make an ident for both the iphone and the tv screen.

Resolution: this is all about making the video or ident clearer for the viewers to see and it also makes the ident look smooth and silk more interesting. In this present day and age technology has improved so much that we have very high definition resolutions the limitations with these resolutions is that it brings out every piece of detail in the video or ident and its very space consuming. There are new resolutions out there that are up to 4k but for television and youtube the standard resolution is 1080p.
Youtube have improved in this present age that it gives the user the option to increase the resolution of the video they are watching to high as 4k.

2a(Opportunities)

1. Creation of corporate identity
In this modern time and age television channels are no longer restricted to only one country, therefore idents helps create a brand for these television channels in a range of different locations around the world. Consistency across a range of channels such as the Bbc helps the channel to establish a corporate identity that is sold across the world with the increase of online platforms like the BBc i player, it is very important that the identity of the channel could be easily diluted in the online world.
Creating a brand for a channel is very importatnt as it encourages viewers to stay loyal to that channel, an ident therefore again helps to endorse the brand of these television channels such as BBC, allowing the audience to become familar with the logo and style of the channel and these things tend to be a visual reminder of a channel and imprints the brand of the television channel into the mind of the audience that way the viewers are likely to watch that channel again.

2. branding of content
An ident can also be used or can also serve the purpose of identifying that a particular content or a particular television program belongs to a certain television channel and therefore the television channel uses that program in their idents which promotes the program itself and also brands the content, for example in 2012 the BBC were inhcrage of broadcasting the olympics and they made several idents that incorprated the theme of the olympics.

It can also be used to retain a consistent theme across a range of platdfroms. Branding of content also opens new marketing opportunity as an ident is a very clear promotional tool in the television world. Another example where we can see branding of content been involved in an ident is in the channel 5 time bomb ident, advertsing big borther.

Also branding of content allows television channels to package and repackage a series of programs or events, often idents are used to promote large events such as the olympics, x factor, the voice e.t.c. other times they are used to promote new series or program. for example strictly come dancing.

CREATION OF TONE
Tone; these are descriptive words that are used to stay how a viewer or the target audience feels about the channel or something, one of the purposes of idents is to give a channel an identity as well as setting the tone of the channel all these must be clear during the few minutes an ident is been broadcasted on screen, idents create tone by just using the images that are been displayed on screen that are consistent through a suite of ident or through a particular ident in general.
For example in the ident above with the images displayed and the soundtrack that is been used in the suite of idents we can drag some descriptive words from the tone such as daring, also the actors that are been used aren't teenagers they are actually young adults, supermodels and therefore the target audience aspire to be like them, that's another tone derived from the ident.

APPEAL TO TARGET AUDIENCE
Another purpose for idents are for them to appeal to their target audience so that the audience will know what channel it is for the by simply watching the ident, the ident is meant to tell the viewers who the target audience are by just watching the idents.

For example the ident above is designed in such a way that it appeals to younger audience, with the way its designed and the animated characters that are been used and how they are both been used with the sound track as well, and the colour pallet that is been used as well is bright and that is usually situated with young kids as they are usually more lively.

|Encouragement of brand loyalty

Brand loyalty; this is the visual representation of how the viewer sees the channel, which reminds them of the channel so they keep coming back to the channel, this is people choosing to come back to a particular brand because either they have grown up with it giving them that feeling of  safety.
For example the suite below of BBC1 shows that they have branded themselves in a particular way which helps the user have a visual representation of te bbc which in this case is the colour red.

Task 3a: ident

Theme: The theme of my ident here is coming at you everyday; I feel that the ident slightly met its theme which involved certain characters laying it out. But when compared to a viva ident it doesn't really hit the theme well.

Tone: due to the soundtrack used the ident is meant to set the tone to be excited; however it doesn't fully do that.

Brand Identity: The Brand identity of our ident is meant to be originality that's why we have cast from the shows that are aired on the station present on the ident. Comparing this ident to the other idents such as viva's it doesn't really hit that because the ident doesn't really show any originality as the shows can soon be moved to another channel.

Task 1b: Design And Purpose

E4 Ident : Interactive with Audience/ Purpose

This ident appeals to the purpose of been interactive with its selected target audience which in this case i will say there are young people the reason been that the logo was once in form of a tetrix game before expanding out then coming back to form the E4 logo.

This is interactive with the audience as it  takes them from the young man playing a game on his phone we are lead to believe that the young man is the one playing the game which brings me to the purpose of the ident which is that the channel E4 which is targeted at youths is made and created by youths which shows that the show that they have on there will very much likely appeal to them.

2.Channel 5: Time-bomb (Information-led/ segmentation within scheduling)

This channel 5 ident below is very good example of an infromation led and a segmentation between scheduling, the ident tells or infroms the viewer of a show that is popular Tv show and also advertises a diffrent show and tells the view what is coming on next, what a great deal of infromation for an ident. Such idents are said to be dual function as they advertise other shows and ats the same times tells the audience what is next in under 17 seconds. The purpose of the ident here is to enlighten the viewers on what is coming up next and the design has helped them advertise a popular sow on their channel.

3. Sky Movies: Star Wars (Marketing
Promoting is the point at which somebody a man or organization and so on, needs to offer a specific item to the group of onlookers their planned target crowd. A case of an ident that utilizations advertising is the Sky motion pictures Star Wars ident. In this ident the plan of it was to fuse a motion picture that they are communicating or offering inside their channel, into the ident. For this situation this ident was utilized to advance it and utilize it as a route for the group of onlookers to watch the Star Wars establishment and new motion pictures that they are promoting. From the responsibility for motion picture, we realize that Star Wars was made by Lucas movies which is claimed by twentieth century fox n which they are both possessed by Sky. This is additionally a case of collaboration.

4. BBC THREE (RE-BRANDING/ SCREEN TEMPO)
Rebranding a channel is the process of changing the look and the purpose of the Tv channel in a way that it appeals to a new and bigger audience and other times it might be to change the purpose of the channel. For example BBC three is a channel that is target at a younger audience and previously they were only known by a simple colour pink, but as time went on they rebranded their channel and starting using a different colour scheme which was pink and the logo was a lot more artistic than what it used to be. This was done in order to keep up with their target audience as most of them are now more artistic lively and vibrant. Also they rebranded their channel and created a new way their channel should be seen, due to the new logo and the newly selected colour scheme we could say that BBC 3 are now visually dynamic in order to appeal to their colours and also that they stand out from other Tv channels based on the colour scheme whiich is pink and the colour pink as we know stands out very much.

5.DISNEY (SEGMENTATION WITHIN SCHEDULING)
The use of most idents is for the purpose of segmenting; in the sense that these idents for this specific purpose tend to have a similar theme with the programmes that are been aired on that channel and most times it tends to be what show is coming up next, most times they might even have a character from the show coming up next in the ident, a very good example is the Disney channel ident, which has a character from the upcoming show, which informs the viewers what is coming up next, a very good example is the ident below.

6. BBC ONE (BRANDING)
Branding when it comes to idents simply means given a channel an identity, this is done by the use of idents, logos and a particular jingle, this is usually the first message that the audience picks out about the channel and what it has to say or offer that differentiates it from other channels.
The Bbc ident is important because the ident has a more visual representation which encourages brand lolyalty.

IDENT PREP WORK

A channels identity or the way a channel brands itself is how a channel presents itself in order for it to be appropriate and grab the attention of its specific target audience. The channel branding may contain graphical elements such as logos and jingles which will be associated with that channel alone that portrays whatever the channel is all about to the general public and its selected target audience. The branding and identity of a channel has to be visually strong in order for it to pass across its specific idea to its target audience.

Brand loyalty are unspoken promises that states that a consumer either an individual or a company will continue to buy or use a particular product or services provided by a particular company. This in turn makes a consumer committed to a particular brand or service making the same purchases each time. This is very important for television channels due to its aim is to get its product and services to a wider audience without losing its particular audience.

Re-branding a channel this is the process of changing the image of a company or TV channel. Rebranding is the creation of a new look and feel for an established product or service. a complete overhaul of the corporate image. The usual aim of rebranding a TV channel is to influence a consumer's perception about the channel's content.

Segmentation is the process of dividing the areas of marketing into parts, for a particular company. one of the main reason why segmentation is been used in Tv stations is to find a desirable audience which is its target audience since a Tv company cannot meet everybody's target they will have to select a particular target audience and then work towards making the needs of that particular target audience met.

TASK 2.

This Ident showcase or tells the audience what the channel is all about which is movies as it starts from the view of a camera/ projector lens displaying and also the background noise of the movies around and it uses CGI to create a beautiful and graphically strong ident that appeals to its target audience.

CHARACTERISTICS:
Sound
CGI images

In the video above there are more than one idents present but in all of them they share the same characteristics such as sound it doesnt use any  CGI images its just props been set out and then orange paint been poured on them.

In the video  above we can see a varirty of idents which uses both sound filmed video and CGI images all in one with various colours which makes it appealing to the channels target audience.
